Tips For Finding a Lost Animal

When you lose your pet make Social Media posts including a recent and clear PHOTO, PHONE NUMBER, and last known LOCATION and TIME:

  1. Create a PUBLIC post on Facebook. Be sure your security settings are such that people can send friend requests and share/comment on your post. – there are Lost/Found pages for any area of KC Metro. You may need to request access, but these groups are FREE to join.

  2. Post on www.Nextdoor.com – if you are not a member, you can sign up for your area. Be sure to make your post under the dog section. This is another FREE service that you can utilize.

  3. Post with www.pawboost.com – ignore requests for payment, this is a FREE service. These posters can be printed off and you can give them to all of your neighbors.

  4. Post in Neighbors by Ring – this is a FREE app

  5. If your neighborhood has a Home Owners Association (HOA) or Apartment Complex Website or Facebook group that you can post in – make a lost pet post here.

  6. You can screenshot your post and send to local rescues, shelters, and veterinarians (be sure to include emergency vet clinics). This will allow them to check against any new intakes and any injured animals.

If you LOST your DOG, follow these steps:

  1. Do not chase your dog – your dog could be scared and may not recognize you

  2. Leave smelly food (ex. Canned Alpo, Pedigree, etc) and water outside.

  3. IF YOU HAVE A GARAGE – open the door just enough for the dog to slip under. Place their dog bed inside the garage.

  4. IF YOU HAVE A YARD – open the gate to your backyard. If you use an Electric fence, be sure to turn this off.

  5. Place articles of “dirty” laundry outside, preferable hanging in the air so wind can carry a familiar scent.

  6. Fling wet cat food in your front yard. The smell is attractive to most dogs.

  7. Crack a window or door allowing the scent of your home outside and enabling you to hear the dog if it returns.

  8. If your pet is microchipped, make sure all of the contact information for that chip is updated.

  9. If you adopted your pet from a local rescue, reach out to them and see if they can help you during your search.

  10. Physically visit each shelter in your area to look for your dog.

Thank you to KC Dog Trappers for these tips and tricks. If you need help locating your lost dog in the KC Metro area, please reach out to the KC Dog Trappers using the contact information on their Facebook Page.

Printed Lost Pet Posters are an effective way of getting your pet home.

  1. Buy BRIGHT colored POSTER BOARD (larger than normal printer paper so it can be seen easily)

  2. Write in plain handwriting using a thick sharpie “LOST DOG” (or cat) and a phone number to call if spotted. Keep the poster simple, too many words and people may not read!

  3. Print a large recent photo of the animal. Showing what the animal may look like.

  4. Post this sign at all intersections in a 1 mile radius

FIND A LOOSE/STRAY DOG? Do NOT chase!

1. Do not chase the dog! Try to get a picture or video of the dog.

2. Leave food where you saw the dog, preferably in a safe area away from traffic.

3. Pull up Google Maps, zoom-in/out as needed to show an exact location, screenshot.

4. Post to the local lost/found Facebook pg and report to local animal control describing the dog/location/direction headed as best as possible. This will help them when they come out to catch the dog.

5. If the dog is seen near the same location on 2+ days, please contact your KC Dog Trappers.
